ACCIONA Energía is developing the Ripley BESS project in response to a request for proposals issued by the Independent System Operator (IESO), the coordinator and integrator of Ontario’s electricity system.
The Ripley facility is in Bruce Municipality, Ontario and will feature a maximum proposed capacity of 200MW/800MWh (4-hour storage). The standalone battery storage facility will supply energy, capacity and ancillary services to the IESO, which manages the transmission, distribution and commercialization of electricity for approximately the Province of Ontario.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) allow excess energy generated from clean, intermittent sources to be captured and released during demand peaks or system disturbances, allowing energy to be injected into the grid upon demand.
In addition, these systems contribute to reinforcing grid stability and improve energy security, offering a solution to unforeseen or exceptional situations that may impact the local electric grid.
- Location:Bruce Municipality, Ontario, CA
- Capacity: 200MW/800MWh storage (4-hour storage)
- Technology: Battery Energy Storage System
- Timeline: Begin Operations: Earliest COD May 31,2027
- Owners: ACCIONA Energía
KEY POINTS
- Ripley BESS will join three other ACCIONA Energía BESS projects in Ontario, marking a deep investment in the province.
- Reinforce grid stability and improve energy security during peak demand periods.
- Important Note: The Sunday, December 10th virtual community meeting for the Ripley BESS project is cancelled and will not be re-scheduled as this project is on hold until further notice. Please check back on our project website for further updates. We apologize for the inconvenience.
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) collects energy from the electrical grid and then discharges that energy later to provide electricity when needed. This is like charging your phone while you sleep so you can use it when it is most needed.
Yes, energy storage systems are fuel neutral. The BESS can charge from electricity generated by any fuel source. However, when BESS is charged with renewable energy it moves us closer to meeting emissions reduction goals.
Storage systems support a more efficient and resilient electrical grid, which produces a variety of benefits for consumers, businesses and communities. Some of these benefits include reduction of outages and increased grid resilience, reduces costs by storing energy when prices are low and discharging during periods of high demand, supports a sustainable grid and supports local economies.
Battery life depends on usage and can last for up to 20 years. Batteries can degrade based on numerous factors such as number of charge and discharge cycles and the temperature of the environment the batteries are exposed to. However, to compensate for this degradation, batteries can be replaced as part of a larger maintenance program.
A large portion of the battery can be recycled for future use in new batteries. Many of the metals used in the battery hold their value beyond the life of the battery.
